The Richland Career Advisors are very anxious to work with those students who would like to have some additional help in deciding their college major and/or career. Due to peak class registration times throughout the year, there are some periods of time that the career advisors are not able to take appointments, i.e. the 6 weeks prior to the Fall semester beginning and the first couple of weeks back after the winter holidays.
During these periods of time, or prior to you making your first appointment with a career advisor, we would like to give you the opportunity to take advantage of some online career websites we believe to be very beneficial in starting you in the right direction toward meeting your goals. Please take advantage of one or any combination of the following websites to get you started. Then be sure to get in touch with one of Richland’s Career Advisors who can add to your process of career and/or degree major selection. Happy career planning!
This website is a thorough, extensive site that will assist students in choosing a career, or choosing a college major. This website measures your skills, abilities, talents, values, interests, and personality in a simplified format that will help you better understand where you might be the happiest in a career. Your information can be saved for you to refer back to it and for you to bring with you for your first appointment with one of Richland’s Career Advisors.

This very comprehensive website addresses all the key aspects of career development:
• Self-assessment
• Research
• Decision making
• Networks and contacts
• Work
• Life Work Planning
The Self-Assessment portion is especially thorough. Pages can be printed and used now and in the future. Everything begins with the writing of “Pride Experiences” from various times in one’s life, then drawing from those experiences to assess personality traits, values, skills, interests, and knowledge/learning. Whether or not self-employment is the right choice is also addressed. The assessments use Dr. John Holland’s work in career research to categorize. We believe that anyone could successfully use these assessments to guide their research activities in the world of work.

This site offers a series of exercises to increase your understanding of yourself and enables you torelate this knowledge to career options.
After answering questions about your skills, personal qualities, interests, and values, a list of career options is offered. These options are linked to occupational information.
You will want to work on this exercise when you have a couple of hours to spend since the occupations that will be generated will be linked to information that you will want to browse right then (since they can't be saved to a file). You will want to print your summary, and there is an opportunity to email it, also.
If you would like to set up an appointment after registration is over, please phone one of the career advisors.
