The process of choosing a career is a lifelong process. It includes not only choosing an occupation but finding a job, growing as a person in your job, the possibility of changing direction in your career, and then preparing for retirement. This process will introduce the student to the career planning tools of gathering information from self-assessments, exploring occupational options, evaluating these occupations in search of a match, and developing an action plan to reach your goal
As a counselor I believe (in no particular order):
» We work with others as whole integrated beings
» We have the freedom to make choices and to take risks (having freedom gives us options)
» We seek purpose (meaning in life)
» We work in the here-and-now (bring "old business" to the present)
» We are responsible for our actions and choices
In working with the student:
» Build rapport in a safe environment
» Work as a team with the student being responsible for choices and direction
» Recognize the strengths of the student (build on strengths as well as weaknesses)
I sincerely believe that we do have choices and freedom in our career decisions and that the job doesn't make the person but is an extension of themselves - one should enjoy their choices -- their journey of life.
