Program Description

Aseptic Techniques for Pharmacy Technicians

A structured program designed to meet the requirements of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for pharmacy technicians who compound sterile products. 20 Home Study Hours + 36 Live Contact Hours = 56 Hours Total. Upon successful completion, students will receive a Statement of Credit for 15 CE hours to submit to PTCB as part of their continuing education requirements. No ACPE program number is required.

Who Should Attend:

This program is intended for pharmacy technicians who desire to increase their knowledge of aseptic techniques and the compounding and dispensing of intravenous medication, cytotoxic, and hazardous drugs. To pass the exams in this course, the pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee will have to pass written exams, including mathematics used in pharmacy calculations, and demonstrate proper technique in preparing compounded sterile products.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee should be able to:

  1. Discuss parenteral drug therapy delivery systems.
  2. Discuss principles of sterility.
  3. Discuss Texas Pharmacy Rules related to compounding sterile products.
  4. Perform pharmaceutical calculations used in compounding sterile products.
  5. Determine compatibilities and stabilities of compounded sterile products.
  6. Demonstrate the proper cleaning and use of a laminar flow hood.
  7. Demonstrate the proper handling and compounding of sterile products.
  8. Safely prepare, store, and handle chemotherapeutic agents.

Program Schedule

Students should expect to complete home study utilizing textbook and materials posted online, including reading and end of chapter self-assessments. All exams are administered online to optimize class time for lecture review and hands-on skill development. This course is offered once per semester; please see current schedule listing for available course dates and meeting times.

Continuing Education Credit

Per requirements set forth by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, Pharmacy Technicians may apply one college course towards their continuing education during their two-year certification period. The college course must be in either a Life Science or Math, and counts as 15 hours of CE. This course meets those requirements. No ACPE program number is required.

Upon successful completion, students will receive a Statement of Credit for 15 CE hours to submit to PTCB as part of their continuing education requirements. If audited, students may submit to PTCB EITHER a copy of their Certificate of Completion, which will note the Statement of Credit for 15 hours of CE credit, OR an official transcript from Richland College.

Weekend Refresher Course for IV Technicians
Are you already working as an IV technician, and need an IV certificate that validates your established skills? Beginning in Spring 2012, we will also offer an accelerated Certificate for those who already possess the hands-on skills, and simply need to complete 40 hours of continuing education for national IV Certification. Our course includes:

  • 4 week period to complete 24 hours of online course work (including online examination)
  • One weekend of laboratory skills validation in a cleanroom environment
  • participants must demonstrate 100% proficiency in prescribed skills demonstration, in addition to passing online exam, in order to gain certificate and 40 hours of CE credit
  • Tuition includes textbook and liability insurance

  • CANCELLATION NOTICE: insufficient registrations will cause this program to be canceled.

    REFUND POLICY: A 100% refund will be granted for students who drop the course on or before the first class meeting date.
