Why take honors classes?
Are you intellectually curious? Do you want more personal involvement in your classes, from choosing texts and study topics to leading class discussions? Do you enjoy small, discussion-oriented classes with great teachers? Do you like thinking, discussing, reading and writing, and are you excited about developing those skills? Then you will thrive in the Honors Program at Richland College. This program offers you a unique set of creatively designed transferable courses which will help you formulate good questions, tolerate diverse points of view, become a more effective listener and critical thinker, and draw meaningful connections between educational and life experiences.
How can I participate in the Honors Program?
Option I
Enroll in one or more honors courses which match your particular interests or educational needs. Usually, the qualifications are the same as for regular courses. Remember, these are small, discussion-oriented classes emphasizing reading, writing and often collaboration with peers. Scan the list below for a course which sparks your interest. All of these courses will be flagged as "Honors" on your transcript. If you need more information, contact the Honors Office, then sign up!
Option II
If you complete any four honors courses (with A's or B's) plus the Honors Seminar SPCH 1311, you are awarded the Honors (four-course) Certificate. You will also be recognized at a special celebration in your honor.
Option III
If you would like to become more involved in the honors experience, you may apply to the Honors Scholar Program. As an Honors Scholar, you will complete a series of courses which provides a special learning environment aimed at helping you draw meaningful connections between educational and life experiences.
You may apply too become an Honors Scholar within six weeks of completing any one course in the Honors Core Curriculum (ENGL 1302H, ENGL 2333H, or CUST 2370H marked "core courses" in the Enrichment Brochure) by filling out an application and returning it to the Honors Office. You become an Honors Scholar once the Honors Program Steering committee has reviewed and approved your application.
You will be awarded the Honors Scholar Certificate after you complete a sequence of seven courses. The required courses are:

| PHIL 2306 | Ethics |
| Any three other honors courses from at least two disciplines. | |
If you are accepted into the Honors Scholar Program and maintain a 3.5 GPA, you are eligible to apply for a Richland College Scholarship.
