We will explore the myths, the legends, and the realities of cultural diversity in the United States - both sociologically and historically. The course will include text, feature films, guest lecturers, and videos that address issues inherent to American minorities and the impact of stereotypical images associated with four specific minority cultures - the American Indian, Latino American, African American and Asian American cultures. We will study the impact that television shows, news media, and films have had in shaping our views and attitudes about minority cultures, whether we are aware of their influences or not. We will look at the social, psychological and visual impact that these cultural portrayals have had on the general public's beliefs and perceptions about minority cultures.

The goal of this course is not only to become more familiar with these cultures, but also to examine ourselves and how our culture affects our own lives. The journey towards understanding others begins with understanding ourselves. Grades are determined by four tests, a journal covering each minority group covered, a group presentation/paper, class participation, and attendance.
