Mind-Body Health

Learning Communities - Global Puzzle

"Exploration is the key... The journey (to understand the mind-body connection) is worth making for what each of us might learn about this remarkable union of mind, body and spirit that is the human being."
Bill Moyers,
Healing and the Mind, 1993

"Those (of us) who advocate educating the total personality point out that man's behavior is determined only in part by intellectual processes and decisions. Equally, if not more important are the emotions (and their connection to) physical and mental health."
B. Lamar Johnson,
General Education in America, 1952

Health depends on a state of equilibrium among the various factors that govern the operation of the body and the mind; equilibrium, in turn, is reached only when man lives in harmony with his external environment."
Hippocrates, 460? - 377? B.C.

We invite you to...
enhance

your understanding of mind, body, and spirit. Mind-body health involves the whole person - - social, emotional, intellectual, physical, occupational, environmental, and spiritual.

explore

credible information about conventional and complementary medical practices. You will learn about the many pathways to achieving optimal health, and discover your own healing abilities.

expand

your knowledge of mind, body, and spirit by enrolling in credit classes. Mind-body health courses can be found throughout our traditional credit curriculum. These classes provide opportunities for you to explore the "inner landscape of your life." We believe this inner work is the true heart of mind-body-spirit health.

earn

a certificate of completion in mind-body health. Successful completion of a minimum of 16 credit hours of mind-body health classes and at least one service-learning project will earn you this certificate. A maximum of two courses in any one discipline (e.g., biology, English, psychology, etc.) will be counted toward the certificate.
enter

the Mind-Body Health Study Institute located in the Lago Vista Gallery on the lower level of the library. The library's collection of books on mind-body-spirit health is housed here. You are also invited to use this space for contemplation, study, and dialogue about substantive matters related to mind, body, and spirit.

engage

in a contemplative walk of our TLC Labyrinth, located outdoors just north of Fannin Hall. Other college programs associated with the Institute include the Fitness Center, Work Like Your Dog Institute, Employee Wellness Program, Continuing Education, and the Thunderwater Organizational Learning Institute. Programs and activities for students, staff, and the community are presented in conjunction with the Student Programs and Resources (SPAR) office.

enroll

in mind-body health classes during the regular credit registration period. Our classes are identified in the class schedule with the designation "M/B/Health" in the right column. For more information on the Institute, please call 972/238-3738 or 972/238-6223.
Our Mission

The Institute promotes health and well-being through programs and activities that recognize the integral relationships among mind, body, and spirit. The goal of the Institute is to facilitate people's journeys toward wholeness by reuniting their inner lives of mind and spirit with their outer lives of action and service.
