GREENRichland

GREENRichland envisions a college community for which environmental sustainability is a way of life for staff and students, a benchmark for decision makers, an emphasis for educational programs, and a catalyst for collaborative global partnerships.

GREEN @ Richland: Real, Shared, Whole
For 2008, 2009, GREENRichland is working to make sustainability at Richland College:
• Action-oriented and measurable
• Transparent and inclusive
• Reflective of the core connections between people, planet, and profit

Richland is now an institutional member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, the premier such organization in the U.S. and Canada. Not only does this ally the college with hundreds of peer institutions, it allows employees and students access to a wealth of member-only resources. How Green is Richland?

Throughout 2008 Richland is helping pilot STARS—the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Reporting System. This new system will reveal the college’s sustainability status in multiple dimensions and standardize the way progress is measured and reported nationwide. Read more about STARS here.

Now There’s DCCCDGreen

Representatives of all DCCCD locations have formed the district’s first system-wide sustainability group. Called DCCCDGreen, its first meetings have already resulted in mission/vision statements, the beginnings of goals/objectives, and target areas of operation in which the group believes it can have the greatest impact. Stay tuned!

Richlanders Present at NISOD Conference

Carole Lester, Eddie Hueston, and David led a breakout session at the recent National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development conference in Austin, Texas. Titled "GREENRichland: Building Sustainable Local and World Community," it summarized Richland's multi-dimensional sustainability initiatives. Download their presentation.

What You Can Do

Create a GREEN Future for Richland and Beyond

Plan to participate in "Reinventing GREEN at Richland," a Fall 2008 visioning experience that will be open to students and staff. Watch this site for details.

Take Action

Stop Using Paper Like It Grows on Trees
Every ream of virgin paper accounts for 18.5 lbs. of CO2 in the air—and Richland copiers use 15,000 reams/year, generating 140 tons of CO2. What to do? 1. Reduce your paper use—use 1/2 inch margins, copy front-and-back. 2. Reuse paper—send it to the Testing Center for student use. 3. Recycle it in an office or hallway bin. 4. (Re)purchase recycled paper—in the bookstore or through the college’s vendor. Result: you’ll reduce CO2 emissions by up to 60% without increasing your costs. Check out www.environmentalpaper.org.
