Japanese

Richland College uses "Lets Learn Japanese," an audio-visual program in its coursework. It offers interesting and challenging video tapes which are also broadcast on PBS on some days. Video tapes are also available for viewing on campus in the Telecourse Center / Language Lab in B217/B218. Written material required is the "Japanese Study Guide," a Richland publication for four consecutive semesters.

Beginning Japanese

1st Semester (JAPN 1411) - Fall semester

1. Study of Katakana and Hiragana (2 syllabaries for the written language) as well as 50 Chinese characters.
2. Conversation based on "Let's Learn Japanese," lesson 1- 4.

2nd Semester (JAPN 1412) - Spring semester

1. Review of the first semester materials
2. Conversation based on "Let's Learn Japanese," lesson 5 - 8.
3. Reading and writing Japanese texts, based on dialogs in Lesson 1 to 8. Additional 100 Chinese characters.

Intermediate Japanese

3rd Semester (JAPN 2311) - Fall semester

1. Review of the first year material (oral and written)
2. Conversation based on "Let's Learn Japanese," lessons 9 and 10.
3. Reading and writing Japanese texts based on dialogs in lessons 1 to 10. Approximately 180 Chinese characters.

4th Semester (JAPN 2312) - Spring semester

1. Conversation based on "Lets Learn Japanese," lesson 11-13.
2. Reading and writing Japanese texts based on dialogs in lesson 11-13. Additional 50 Chinese characters.
3. Translation of small texts using the Japanese - English character dictionary (Nelson).

Advanced Intermediate Japanese

This is a strong review of the previous material covered in Basic Japanese I. The instructor uses pattern drills and role playing to improve oral skills in Japanese. New video tapes from "Let's Learn Japanese," Basic II are used.
