Acquiring Portuguese language skills will allow students to speak the language of more than 200 million people who live in Portugal, Brazil (the largest economy in South America), and several African countries, that are former Portuguese colonies.

Portuguese Progam

As more people transact business with Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries, the Portuguese language is becoming one of the important languages of commerce for North Americans

You may be surprised to learn that Portuguese is one of the world's "top ten" languages. In those top ten, Spanish and English are the only other European Languages.

Portuguese is spoken in many parts of the world: Portugal, Brazil, India, Asia, Five African counties and North America.

Portuguese 1311 Beginning Portuguese (3 credits/hours)
This is an introduction to Portuguese speaking, comprehension, reading, writing and grammar. Cultural insights are also presented. Emphasis is on pronunciation, comprehension, and oral expression. It is strongly recommended that students who plan to study Portuguese for more than one semester enroll in Portuguese 1411 which includes an extra hour of lab per week (and an extra hour of credit for the course) Students who successfully complete Portuguese 1311 and wish to continue their studies of Portuguese may register for Portuguese 1412. (3 lecture and 1 lab)

Portuguese 1411 Beginning Portuguese (4 credits/hours)
The essential of grammar and easy idiomatic prose are studied. Emphasis is on pronunciation, comprehension, and oral expression. ( 3 lecture and 2 lab)

Portuguese 1412 Beginning Portuguese (4 credits/hours)
Prerequisite: Portuguese 1411or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course is a continuation of Portuguese 1411. Emphasis is on idiomatic language and complicated syntax. (3 lecture and 2 Lab)

Portuguese 2311 Intermediate Portuguese (3 credit/hours)
Prerequisite: Portuguese 1412 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. Reading, composition, and intense oral practice are covered. Grammar is reviewed. (3 lecture)

Portuguese 2312 Intermediate Portuguese
Prerequisite: Portuguese 2311 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. Reading and composition are continued. Grammar is reviewed and expanded. (3 lecture)

Qualifications:
Studies in Linguistics and Phonetics.
Born and educated in Brazil.
Previously: Taught Portuguese in Brazil since 1964
Currently: Teaching at DCCCD, CCCCD, SMU and businesses.
Teacher of Cross Cultural Understanding for International Companies.
Nominee for Best Teacher award twice.
Dean for 10 years at a College in Brazil.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The essentials of grammar and essay idiomatic prose are studies in the course. Emphasis is on pronunciation, comprehension, and oral expression.

More specifically, the following topics will be covered:
 
  1. Phonetics: vowels and consonants.
  2. Morphology: definite and indefinite articles.
  3. Nouns: masculine, feminine, singular and plural.
  4. Adjectives: nationality, possessive and demonstrative.
  5. Pronouns: subject interrogative direct and indirect object, reflexive, and prepositional.
  6. Numbers: cardinal and ordinal.
  7. Verbs: regular (ar - er - ir), irregular (gostar, ser, estar, ter, etc), stem changing verbs (poder, pedir, fechar, etc).
  8. Tense: Present*
  9. Syntax: the sentence and its structure, affirmative, negative, interrogative.
  10. Agreement: subject and verb, noun and adjectives.
  11. Order: nouns, adjective, pronouns, adverbs, verbs
  12. Vocabulary: organized by the following themes, colors, clothes, people, greetings, parts of the body, sports, places, seasons, expressions about weather, celebration, holidays, birthdays, etc.
  13. Culture: general introduction to Brazil. (Typical food, drink, music, flag, capital, history).

  10. describe their, classes, the location of people, places, things, origin and nationality.
  11. tell addresses and telephone numbers, dates, birthdays and prices.
  12. talk about favorite activities and sports, preferences and wishes.
  13. talk about future plans.
  14. describe activities and programs.
  15. express daily activities.
  16. talk about places to go.
  17. describe states ( physical and mental).
  18. describe talents and abilities.
  19. talk about careers, professions and jobs.
  20. talk about obligations, duties, work, activities, where you live, holidays and celebrations.

CLASS POLICIES:

  • • Punctual and regular attendance. Students are expected to attend class regularly and to consult with me whenever an absence occurs. If a student is unable to complete this course, he/she must withdraw by the established withdrawal date. For Spring 2002, the last date to withdraw is April 11. Withdrawing from a course is a formal procedure which the student must initiate and complete. Procedures and instructions specifying withdraw guidelines may be found in the Admissions Office or the Counseling Center. Students who wish to withdraw from this class and fail to meet the withdrawal policy will receive a performance grade, usually an F.
  • • ADA statement - "If you are a student with a disability and /or special needs who requires ADAS accommodations, please contact Richland College Disability services office."
  • • Religious Holidays - "Students who will be absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday must notify the instructor in advance. Please refer to the college catalog Student Obligations section."

LAST REQUIREMENTS:

  • • Lab work is part of your learning. You will have to listen to tapes for comprehension and pronunciation. You may listen to tapes in the lab or rent them.
  • • In addition, you will have to go to the lab 15 hours per semester to work with tapes. These 15 hours will have to be divided in 10 weeks.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:

  • • Quizzes will be given to monitor the students progress.
  • • All assignments will be due on the dates indicated and will have to be complete to get credit for them. Written tests cannot be made-up.
  • • W ritten test .......................... 75 %
  • • Homework and quizzes.......... 25 %

NOTE: Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in classroom.
