Learn about the language and the culture of Vietnam. These courses emphasize speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as Vietnamese life and culture. Courses address the needs of both, foreign language students and Heritage students.
Learn where and how the Vietnamese language was created. Learn about the foundation of the Vietnamese language and increase your vocabulary. The instructor establishes a very comfortable learning environment for students to feel more comfortable speaking Vietnamese in the classroom.
Knowledge of Vietnamese culture, history and philosophy is mixed in with the language lessons. This provides students with valuable insights into Vietnamese metaphors and idioms. It also provides a context for using Vietnamese phrases and vocabulary in everyday life.
This course is designed for students to learn in several different ways: language, culture, reading, discussion, participating in small groups, conversing with your peers and working individually.
Obtain a better understanding of the basic structure and rhythm of this beautiful language. Learn about the land, the people, the beliefs and the wisdom of the Vietnamese.

Beginning Vietnamese
These four courses are offered for credit through registration at the Advising Center and non-credit through Continuing Education:
- • 1st Semester (VIET 1411) requires Textbook and Workbook: Vietnamese For Beginners (Preliminaries - Lesson 6), 2002, written by Cung Tran Thuy-Tien
- • 2nd Semester (VIET 1412) requires Textbook and Workbook: Vietnamese For Beginners (Lessons 7 - 12), 2003, written by Cung Tran Thuy-Tien
Both courses offer audiotapes for individual practice outside of class at the Richland Language Lab in Bonham Hall (B217).
Vietnamese language and culture courses place emphasis on spelling and tones with critical marks, listening and speaking, writing and reading comprehension with additional translation exercises from English to Vietnamese and vice versa. Vietnamese and English are used in class lectures and in-group and individual exercises.
