Program Description

In today's marketplace there is an increased need for professional and business people who can use Spanish in their work, and who understand the Hispanic cultural protocol for behavior in the professional workplace. The success or failure of a professional or business transaction is often determined by how well these language and cultural skills are utilized. These courses are offered at the intermediate and advanced level, and the focus is on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, with emphasis on developing professional and business vocabulary and cross-cultural communication.

Who Should Attend?

Those who would like to use Spanish as a competitive edge in the current lean economic circumstances and who want to develop successful communication skills for the workplace environment.

Immersion Environment

The program emphasizes a communicative approach, with Spanish as the tool for classroom interaction in a language immersion setting. You will engage in pair work, role-plays, problem-solving activities, and conversations in practical, real-life situations. You will also discuss readings, such as ads, magazine and newspaper articles on current events and contemporary cultural topics from Internet media sources and Hispanic magazines and newspapers.

Business Spanish Certificate

Upon successful completion of this program, Continuing Education students will receive a Certificate in Business Spanish.

Program Format

This is a four-semester intermediate Spanish program oriented to the language and culture of the professional and business workplace. It is taught concurrently for academic or Continuing Education credit.

Program Courses

Intermediate Spanish I- Second year, first semester intermediate Spanish
Spanish 2311- especially designated section for the professions

A course designed to expand vocabulary, structures and cultural understanding needed for success in the professional workplace.

Intermediate Spanish II- Second year, second semester intermediate Spanish
Spanish 2312- especially designated section for the professions

A course designed for those students who are interested in perfecting oral and written communication skills, as well as in understanding the various manifestations of Hispanic culture, with a practical orientation to the professional workplace.

Spanish for Business I- Spanish 2316- offered in the fall semester
Spanish for Business II- Spanish 2317- offered in the spring semester

Conversation courses designed to prepare intermediate-level students for successful communication in the Spanish-speaking business world at home and abroad. Emphasis is on practical, real-life situations, essential workplace vocabulary, oral and written communication, cultural protocol, and current events in the Spanish-speaking world. Students are given the opportunity to express their opinions on many different contemporary issues. They prepare presentations and written reports, which become the center for class discussion and conversation.

Prerequisites

Spanish 2311- requires successful completion of Spanish 1411 and 1412.
Spanish 2312 - requires successful completion of Spanish 2311.
Spanish 2316   2317 - requires a minimum of 3 semesters of college Spanish.

Internet Tasks

A variety of Internet-based activities provide students cultural insights into the many different countries of the Spanish-speaking world, as well as practice in the professional use of the spoken and written language.

Specialized Vocabulary

Functional vocabulary of special importance for the professional and business world is presented in activities which allow students to use these new patterns in everyday, real-life settings.

Professional Business Writing

Students are given numerous opportunities to develop their writing skills by working on varied functional tasks, such as letter writing and putting together reports dealing with contemporary issues of the Spanish-speaking world.

Grammar Review

Grammar structures are presented contextually, that is, they are tied directly to the themes and topics of the different units. Special emphasis is placed on the careful integration of grammar and expression.
