Some of the health professions programs---allied health, medicine, and dentistry---strongly urge prospective students to work with or volunteer for a healthcare professional (in the specific field to which the person is applying) or, at the very least, get some experience in a healthcare setting of some sort.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED:
- Volunteer at a large hospital (Presbyterian or Parkland Hospitals in Dallas have large volunteer services areas)
- Work at a doctor's office
- 'Shadow' a healthcare provider (doctor, dentist, etc.)
- Become an emergency medical technician or paramedic
